TCBY And Mrs. Fields Go To Brazil

Olá! I just returned from an amazing trip that took me to Brazil and India. It is always our practice to do an in-depth visit whenever we are expanding into a new country to learn as much as we can from the local master franchisors. Today, I’ll discuss our trip to Brazil. My next post will share the details of our trip to India.

In Brazil we attended the ABF Franchising Show in Sao Paulo. We were one of only a handful of US brands represented. There were 35,000 attendees at the show, most of which were looking to become a franchisee. While this isn’t our target audience of master franchisors, we felt our presence at this show helped convey that TCBY and Mrs. Fields are here to stay and was a nice opportunity to introduce both brands to Brazil.

We took full advantage of the fact there were 2,000 exhibitors at ABF. Using several Portuguese translators, we interviewed exhibitors to gauge their level of interest in TCBY and Mrs. Fields, their knowledge of our products, and their expertise in distribution channels and opportunities in Brazil. We were able to set up appointments to visit some franchisors to develop strategy for bringing our brand to Brazil and to meet our trip objectives:

  1. Identify potential partners with high business experience, established food distribution, strong market and government regulations knowledge, experience introducing American brands, and successful presence in the marketplace
  2. Make it clear that TCBY is committed to growing (and staying) in Brazil
  3. Study local competitive brands
  4. Learn the economic challenges facing the market
  5. Discuss how the brand might be launched
The Brazilian market is seeking healthy options, with the country’s government pushing the adoption of a healthier lifestyle. The local government has even gone so far as to fund company paid employee lunch programs. Brazilians view yogurt as a healthy food choice and not as an alternative to ice cream like we do here in the US. This health-conscious mindset combined with our proven success in the US and other countries has us very confident that TCBY will become Brazil’s “the country’s best yogurt.”

TCBY and Mrs. Fields Making India a Little Sweeter

Namaste! Our trip to Delhi, India was amazing. We attended the Master Franchise Show, which was sponsored by Franchise India. This show is very similar to the Multi Unit Franchise show we offer here in the US. The India show had 800 attendees, representing a powerful group of master franchisors. TCBY and Mrs. Fields were the only American brand in attendance. The attendees loved our dual branding concept!

As mentioned in my last post, we strongly believe in immersing ourselves in the local culture and learning from their master franchisors when we are expanding into a new country. This trip afforded us the opportunity to vet master franchisors and develop business relationships with those who have direct experience introducing US food brands and also have strong manufacturing and real estate site selection experience in India. These elements are hugely beneficial to a successful launch and ongoing success in the country.

While in India we were fortunate to tour various stores and observe in a very hands-on way their daily operations. This is invaluable information to aid us in better understanding the market to enable us to create an experience that appeals to the local people. Along these same lines, we also researched opportunities to extend our product line beyond frozen yogurt and freshly baked cookies to further appeal to the consumers in India who we learned are very health conscious. Looks like India will be the next county to make TCBY their country’s best yogurt!

What I love about the New Mrs. Fields Philippines website

Recently we launched a new Mrs. Fields website created by our franchisees in the Philippines. I’m going “cookies” over it, and wanted to share it with you. Take a look at mrsfields.com.ph. Here are some of my favorite things about the new website:

  1. It connects emotionally. Mrs. Fields is all about the fun of giving a gift, receiving a gift, and the way you feel when you taste our unique treats, chocolates, and cookies. The use of photography clearly communicates these emotions.
  2. It’s fun and interactive. I can’t think of anything more fun than indulging in cookies and treats. And the use of the “guilty pleasure” link provides a creative way to interact with customers.
  3. Great use of social media. In addition to the “guilty please” links, there is a strong focus on links to our social media platforms.
  4. Building brand innovation. Combining iconic brands like Hershey’s and Reese’s with Mrs. Fields offers a winning “must taste” product offer.
  5. It’s easy to use. The site is as functional as it is fun. It’s easy to order from as well as to identify the desired Mrs. Fields location nearest you.

What do you think of the site? Please post and let me know what you think or e-mail me at trobinson@famousbrandsintl.com.

TCBY Is Growing in Niagara Falls

As Published in: Niagara Gazette

BUSINESS: New Military Road plaza now offers Chipotle, TCBY and Five Guys

If the cars in the parking lot are any indication, business has been good at the new Military Road plaza offering three new food locations for area shoppers and residents.

On Tuesday, Chipotle Mexican Grill opened to provide sustenance to long lines of fans of the fast food franchise in a small plaza across from the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls. A Five Guys burger and fries restaurant in the same location had equally enthusiastic crowds, which haven’t seemed to slow since that franchise store opened on Oct. 6.

For those seeking dessert after their hamburgers and Mexican grilled tacos and salads, a TCBY frozen yogurt is the third new store in the plaza.

Mrs. Fields Confections Acquires Assets of Maxfield Candy Company

Acquisition of Premier Brands Maxfield Candy and Nutty Guys to Accelerate Growth at Mrs. Fields

BROOMFIELD, Colo., Dec. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Famous Brands International (“Famous Brands”), the parent company of TCBY Yogurt and Mrs. Fields Cookies, today announced that its subsidiary Mrs. Fields Confections acquired virtually all of the assets of International Confections Company, LLC dba Maxfield Candy Company, including premium brands Maxfield Candy and Nutty Guys following entry of an order of the Third Judicial District Court of Salt Lake County, Utah.

“We are extremely excited that the Maxfield Candy brand, whose previously owner was a long-standing Mrs. Fields licensee, will officially join our family as we continue to expand the iconic Mrs. Fields and TCBY brands throughout the world,” said Joyce Hrinya, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Famous Brands. “With a renowned heritage as a premium confectioner dating back nearly 70 years, the Maxfield Candy brand is an ideal fit and I’m confident that the addition of these delicious treats to the Famous Brands portfolio will delight our existing and future customers. Nutty Guys is also a high quality nut, dried fruits and popcorn brand that will both complement and augment our existing portfolio of premium products. Additionally, the prior owner of these brands had a team of highly-skilled employees who were put out of work once International Confections went in receivership. We look forward to bringing as many of these employees as practical and have already extended some offers to join Famous Brands.”

“As a long-standing partner to Mrs. Fields, Maxfield Candy is a natural addition to our portfolio,” said James Zenni, Chairman of Famous Brands and Chief Executive Officer of Z Capital. “The Famous Brands’ team has worked tirelessly to capitalize on the significant potential of the Company’s platform, and today, TCBY and Mrs. Fields are distinctly positioned in their respective markets and expanding rapidly. With the recent success of TCBY and Mrs. Fields, including our in-store gifting stations, the addition of the Maxfield Candy and Nutty Guys brands will only accelerate the global demand for Famous Brands’ products. We look forward to capitalizing on the tremendous growth prospects of these two brands to further elevate TCBY and Mrs. Fields and continue the momentum at Famous Brands.”

Famous Brands is a portfolio company of Z Capital Partners, L.L.C., a leading private equity firm with approximately $1.9 billion of regulatory assets under management.

Meet Successful Franchise Owner Lomesh Amin

The Windy City Is Extra Cool Thanks To Franchisee Lomesh Amin

chicago-franchiseeLomesh is the king of sweet-tooth satisfaction in Chicago and across Illinois and Wisconsin, serving up yummy frozen yogurt and irresistible freshly baked cookies. He’s been with Famous Brands since 2002 when he opened his first Mrs. Fields franchise. His first TCBY opened several years later in 2011. Then when the opportunity became available to do dual branding, he jumped on it because it just made such good sense to him. We recently sat down and talked to Lomesh about his experience with TCBY and Mrs. Fields. Here’s what he had to share with us.

FB: What is your professional background?
LA: I’m an entrepreneur at heart. I always wanted to own my own business. My first venture in the quick service market was with Dunkin Donuts. I’ve also owned restaurants as well as an Auntie Anne’s franchise. So, I had quite a bit of experience before I opened my first Mrs. Fields franchise.

FB: What led you to the decision to buy a Mrs. Fields franchise?
LA: For me, the process was pretty easy. It actually happened quite organically. I’ve always enjoyed eating Mrs. Fields cookies a lot, which got me to thinking that a lot of other people probably did too. I did my research and saw how successful the franchise system is, so I knew I wanted to buy one. My next step was to be persistent about getting a great location in the North Riverside Mall in Illinois. I got the location, and the business just took off. Seeing this success, I knew I wanted to expand throughout the Chicago market, which I have. I also have locations in Wisconsin. My four locations are in malls with the exception of one that is in downtown Chicago. I love that they offer so many non-traditional storefront options as well.

FB: How has our dual branding concept worked for you?
LA: Amazingly well! I love it! The reason I love it is because it has worked incredibly well to boost sales, and it also opened up a new clientele for me that I wouldn’t have otherwise had access to. Now with the frozen yogurt, smoothies, shakes, yogurt cakes, cookies, and cookie cakes, we truly have something for every age group and every sweet tooth. Dual branding enables me to take advantage of two iconic brands that complement each other very well while enabling me to cater to the tastes of all generations.

FB: What advice would you offer someone considering a TCBY/Mrs. Fields franchise?
LA: Well, the good news is that this is honestly by far the easiest and most profitable franchise I’ve ever owned. Once you secure a good location, the rest is pretty easy because the winning formula has already been created for you.

FB: Should only experienced entrepreneurs buy a TCBY and Mrs. Fields franchise?
LA: Absolutely not! If you don’t have any previous experience, then this franchise experience is perfect for you too. The reason I say this is because everything has already been meticulously thought out for you. The ease of operation and all of the support you get from corporate is so beneficial. You can truly be up and running in a very little amount of time – a couple of days. And be profitable!

FB: What do you think sets TCBY and Mrs. Fields apart from the competition?
LA: Let’s face it, there’s a lot of competition in any business. This one is no exception; however, the dual branding concept gives you two iconic brands that customers already know and love and that have managed to stand the test of time and still be cool. That’s powerful, and it helps you immediately stand out from the competition. It also enables you to provide a greater variety of delicious offerings that the competition doesn’t have, which appeals to customers’ varying tastes.  And, the new design format for the dual branded stores is super hip. It’s really contemporary with bright, cheerful colors that grab attention and invite customers to come in, relax, have fun, and eat some really good sweet treats.

Is frozen yogurt recession proof?

Is frozen yogurt recession proof?

The frozen yogurt industry has shown an amazing staying (and growing) power during all economic times. In fact, as far back as 2009, the International Franchise Association reported that the overall number of franchise establishments was expected to drop by 10,000 that year. All except for frozen yogurt, which was slated to grow by a few percentage points. This is quite a notable statistic for any market, especially one in the midst of the economic recession. Now in 2014 the future of frozen yogurt still looks sweet. So, what’s the secret ingredient that makes a TCBY franchise recession proof? Turns out there’s more than one secret ingredient. The success of frozen yogurt is a combination of factors.
Easy Start Up.
The barriers to entry in the frozen yogurt market are low. Build out is quick and relatively inexpensive, and there’s comprehensive training by TCBY professionals every step of the way.
More Health-Conscious Consumers.
There is a growing trend to eat a healthier diet. But, we still crave sweet treats, especially during bad economic times. A frozen yogurt treat fits the bill. It packs a healthy punch while also delivering sweet deliciousness and a much-needed pick-me-up.
Greater Focus On Fun.
When times are tough, it’s nice to have a fun distraction to relieve stress. Going to a TCBY to create a custom swirl complete with a unique combination of toppings is fun and puts a smile on customers’ faces young and old. TCBY’s are a welcoming neighborhood hangout that is all about chilling out.
Need For Affordability.
TCBY’s frozen yogurt provides variety and value to deliver a sweet treat with millions of tasty flavor combinations without breaking the bank. When money is tight, it’s nice to be able to have an economical option that feels indulgent.
